Null Rod

Artifact2 generic mana

A two-mana switch that turns off an entire mechanical category, and the cleanest example of a hosing card whose power scales with how much a format has come to lean on artifacts. The design is brutally simple: it does not destroy mana rocks, it does not stop them from entering, it just shuts off the tap. Every mana ability on every Sol Ring, Mox, and Mana Vault stops working the instant this resolves, and so do equipment activations, fetchland-adjacent artifact engines, and the loops combo decks build out of tapping and untapping artifacts. Its bluntness cuts both ways: it is symmetrical and binary, so it punishes the caster as hard as the table if that deck also wants its own artifacts to do things, which is why it lives in strategies that route mana and engines through lands and creatures instead. Note the exact verb: it stops activated abilities, not triggered ones and not the static effects that make most artifacts function, so a card whose text simply exists on the battlefield keeps doing its job. That precision has kept it relevant across decades of artifact power creep; as printing pushed faster and faster artifact mana, the value of flipping all of it to zero for two mana only climbed.
