Notorious Assassin

Black's answer to "what if a removal spell never left your deck" arrives as a 2/2 body with a button: pay mana, tap, pitch a card, and a nonblack creature dies with no chance to regenerate. That last clause is what made it bite in its own era, when regeneration shields were the standard insurance against point removal and a hardcast Murder could be shrugged off. By printing through that defense, the assassin offered something most kill spells of the day could not: a guaranteed answer, repeatable as long as you had cards to feed it.

The discard cost is the throttle. Every shot eats a card from hand, so the engine cannot machine-gun a board without emptying you out, and the steep activation cost (mana plus a tap plus the pitch) keeps it slower than any instant-speed answer you might cast instead. The nonblack restriction is the genre tax this color pays for repeatable destruction: it slots the card into the long tradition of edicts and kill effects that spare black's own ranks and keeps the assassin from training its blade on a mirror. The fragile body and the grinding pace meant it never displaced a one-shot removal spell on raw rate. What endures is the principle it embodies: a creature that converts excess cards into kills at a fixed exchange rate, the seed of every discard-outlet-as-engine that followed.
