Norwood Archers

Creature — Elf Archer3 generic manaGreen mana

Reach was the Portal-era teaching solution to a problem the beginner sets created for themselves: those products stripped out most evasion vocabulary to keep games legible, but flying still showed up, and a new player with a board full of ground creatures needed a clean answer that did not require explaining first strike, banding, or instant-speed combat tricks. A green body that can shoot a flyer out of the sky without leaving the ground is exactly that answer, framed in the most intuitive way the rules allow: an archer aims up. The stats are deliberately unflashy, sized to trade with the midsize flyers a Portal deck was likely to field rather than to dominate the board. What gives the card a small footnote in design history is the keyword itself; for years the rules handled this effect as a static "can block creatures with flying" line with no name, and the reminder text here is part of the long road toward consolidating that concept into the single word Reach that later sets would print on spiders and bowmen as a matter of course. The Elf Archer line stays plain throughout because the card's job is plain: give green a fair, color-appropriate wall against the air without borrowing from blue or white.
