The regeneration clause is the wrinkle that protects the investment, because a creature whose size depends on your board state is worth keeping alive; feeding it a spare token or a tapped-out blocker to dodge a removal spell is a clean trade. Black gets the artifact-count payoff with attrition insurance folded in, which suits the color's identity better than a clean beater would: the sacrifice cost turns your own creatures into ablative armor. It functions as a deckbuilding lever rather than a card that does work in isolation. Your threat assessment of it shifts entirely based on how deep your battlefield is in artifacts, and that swing is exactly the lesson the design wanted to teach.
