Night // Day

Instant // InstantBlack mana2 generic manaWhite mana

The split-card frame here is doing thematic work the colors alone could not. Black and white share an instinct for control but part ways on method, and this pair states the divide as cleanly as any of the enemy-color splits from its era: black subtracts a single creature, white multiplies a whole board. The two halves are deliberately opposed instants sharing a frame, not two pieces of one effect; you cast Night or Day, never both. The black side is a precise shrink that kills any X/1 outright and can drop a would-be blocker to lethal size at instant speed, an answer aimed at a creature you want gone. The white side points the opposite way: a team-wide pump that lifts your own attackers, the kind of trick that can convert a stalled board into lethal during the attack step. That is the pointed contrast the structure encodes, individual elimination against collective uplift, rather than two readings of the same impulse. Black's instinct here is to remove what stands against it; white's is to rally what serves it. The flavor is not decoration laid over the mechanics; it is the mechanics, each half embodying how its color naturally relates to the creatures on the table, one to an enemy it wants smaller, the other to a team it wants stronger.
