Negate

## In context

The era-artifact lens does not fit here. The two-mana noncreature counter has been in print almost continuously since Morningtide in 2008, including a reprint in TMT itself, and it carries no fixed moment: no defining tournament, no player, no ban story. It is the floor Wizards settled on for narrow blue permission, reaffirmed every product cycle.

In a draft environment the calculus differs from Constructed. TMT's payoffs live on bodies, the legendary Turtles and Shredder, Unrelenting, and Negate answers none of those. It does hit the equipment commons like Bespoke Bō, the artifact subtheme, removal like Stomped by the Foot or Grounded for Life, and exile auras like Dimensional Exile. In a creature-driven midrange format that still makes it a low pick: a sideboard card you rarely run main over a second body or a removal spell.

## In context

A two-mana counter that gives up exactly one thing: the creature. Negate debuted in Morningtide in 2008 and has since become one of the most reprinted utility spells in the game, and the design logic has not moved an inch. Charge one less than Counterspell, narrow the target to noncreature, and let blue answer creatures with its cheaper, more numerous tools elsewhere. The restriction is the point; it keeps the rate honest. In Commander the noncreature clause maps onto most of what actually ends games: the board wipe, the combo piece, the planeswalker, the protective counter in a war over a Craterhoof trigger. Legal in Commander and every constructed format, it has never been near a ban and never will be. It does steady, unglamorous work, which is the whole job.

Negate is sideboard glue, not a fixed point in anyone's canon, and in Pauper that is exactly its job. The format leans hard on noncreature spells to do its heavy lifting: the recurring removal of a control mirror, the artifact and enchantment engines that quietly take over a game, the burn spell aimed at your face, the combo finish on the stack. Negate answers all of it for two mana while leaving the creature problem to the cheaper answers blue runs elsewhere. It shows up as a role-player, mostly out of the board, usually a one- or two-of when a deck wants a clean response to a specific noncreature threat. First printed in 2008 and reprinted constantly since. Legal and unremarkable in every format that allows it.

Calling this an era artifact is almost a category error; it is the opposite of a Reserved List relic, a utility spell Wizards has reprinted across more product lines than almost any other counter. In Legacy it is legal and entirely unrestricted, but the format's blue decks lean on Force of Will, Daze, and the harder counters; Negate's narrowness and its full mana cost keep it out of the tracked lists. It is a common, cheap to acquire, and reprinted across nearly every product line. No notable price.
