Needle Specter
Hypnotic Specter taught a generation that an evasive black flier stapled to a discard trigger ends games before combat math matters, and this is the same skeleton rebuilt around a harsher equation: connect for any amount of damage to a player, and that player discards exactly that many cards. The 1/1 body looks like a liability, because the discard scales off power and unaided power here is one. The card was never meant to threaten alone; it wants pumps, anthems, counter-doublers, anything that turns a single swing into a fistful of discarded cards, so a +X spell stops being a combat trick and becomes a multi-card hand attack. Wither pulls on a different axis entirely. It governs only how the Specter assigns damage to opposing creatures, dropping -1/-1 counters instead of ordinary damage, which means it punishes the blocker rather than the player who lets it through. The two clauses split the opponent's choices cleanly: chump-block and your creature shrinks permanently while you keep your hand; take the hit and you bleed cards. The discard taxes letting it connect; Wither taxes stopping it the cheap way. Unpumped, it nibbles one card per swing, slow enough that an opponent can ignore it. Pumped, those swings turn into hand devastation. Either way the fragile frame is the exact price paid for hanging a recurring discard tax on an evasive body, and answering it early costs almost nothing.
