Recursion as a tax you levy on yourself: every time the Zombie Giant claws back, you spend five mana and feed a creature to the grave, and you can do it only on your own upkeep. That timing clause does the balancing. There is no instant-speed rebuy, no flashing it into combat. An opponent who kills it buys a full turn cycle of breathing room before it can return, and even then the return costs both the mana and a body. Note where the ability lives, too: it activates from the graveyard, not the battlefield. This is not a sacrifice outlet that also swings; it is a creature that climbs out of the yard by consuming something else on the way up, then has to die again before it can repeat the trick. Early black recursion leaned cheap and repeatable, ferrying a card back to hand for a modest sum. This asks instead for a steady supply of expendable fodder and the patience to spend a turn's mana every cycle, a different deckbuilding contract entirely. You are not so much reusing the creature as continually paying a body to keep it on the table. The payoff is an attrition piece an opponent has to answer permanently rather than once, plus a 5/5 that grinds back as long as the fodder holds. It reads like a value engine and plays like a slow drain on your own board, and that friction is why it stayed worth examining long after a six-mana 5/5 stopped impressing anyone on rate.
