Necrite

Creature — Thrull1 generic manaBlack manaBlack mana

The Thrull tribe's whole conceit was disposability: a race of bred servants whose mechanical signature was being thrown away for value, and few of them dramatize that as cleanly as this one. The body is the price, not the payoff. You commit a 2/2 to combat, win the dodge by getting it through unblocked, and then trade the creature itself for the kill. That sequencing is the design discipline. It is not removal you hold up at instant speed; it is removal you have to earn through a combat step, by either threatening enough that the defender declines to block or simply outmaneuvering their board. The reward for clearing that hurdle is steep for the era: destroy a target creature that can't be regenerated, which in a format full of regeneration shields was a meaningful clause rather than boilerplate. The structure rhymes with the assassin archetype black would return to repeatedly, creatures that convert successful attacks into kills, but here the conversion is terminal: the Necrite is spent in the act. What you are really buying is a delayed, conditional, sacrifice-gated removal spell stapled to a fragile attacker, with the catch that the player you most want to kill something against is also the player most able to block your 2/2 before it ever connects.
