The four life is the price, and it is set deliberately too high to be free. The body of the spell is the cleanest possible answer in green's wheelhouse: one mana, instant speed, destroy any artifact or enchantment with no conditions on the target. Green is the color most willing to blow up these permanent types, but a one-mana unconditional instant that did so would be a strict upgrade over every other Naturalize variant, so the design buys the discount back in a resource the caster can usually spare. That four-life rebate is the whole calculus. Against a combo or aggro deck racing on a clock, the gift is a real concession: it can buy the opponent a turn or lift them out of burn range. Against a control deck whose artifact you simply must answer, the life is noise. The card's identity lives entirely in that conditional. It is the fastest unconditional answer green has to either type, and the cost it charges is one that vanishes in exactly the matchups where you have life to give and bites in exactly the ones where you do not. The situational few times the four life hurts are also the situations where the speed mattered most, which is what makes the spell punish reflexive use and reward knowing when the rebate is irrelevant.
