Natural Spring

Sorcery3 generic manaGreen manaGreen mana

Eight life for five mana, with no instant speed, no conditions, no graveyard hook or card-draw rider: just a life total climbing by a fixed number. The card comes from Portal, an introductory product whose audience explains every choice here. The rate is what a designer writes when legibility matters more than efficiency; the point is to demonstrate that life totals are a resource worth spending mana on, not to make the trade competitively defensible. Later sets learned to bundle lifegain with a body, a draw, or a tempo swing precisely because gaining life in isolation rarely changes who wins. The one flicker of generosity is the target-player clause, which lets the spell point at someone other than its caster, though in the one-on-one games this set was built around, that flexibility never mattered. The card captures a moment when green's role as the color that tends life totals could be stated plainly, in a single verb, before the game decided lifegain had to earn its slot by doing two things at once.
