Mundungu

A repeatable Force Spike stapled to a 1/1, with all the friction that implies. The design experiment here is taking the softest counterspell on the books, the kind that taxes rather than denies, and asking what happens when you can offer it every turn for the price of a tap. The answer is in the body and the timing: a 1/1 has to survive a full turn cycle, untap, and then sit there untapped as a standing threat, since an opponent who knows the activation is available will simply hold the extra mana and the life or wait until the Wizard is tapped out of relevance. Adding life to the tax is the era's signature: Visions and its neighbors leaned on small life-payment clauses to make a cost feel real without spending mana, and a point of life per spell paid through accrues across a long game even when the single mana is trivial. The real value is often deterrence rather than execution; an untapped Mundungu that warps how an opponent sequences a turn has done its work without the ability ever resolving. The fragility is the honest cost. Any burn spell, any combat trick, any incidental sweeper erases the engine, and an opponent always sees the threat a full untap step in advance. This is permission for the player who wants to grind permission rather than cast it, a Wizard built to make every spell across the table cost a little more than its caster wanted to pay.
