Mogg Salvage

Instant2 generic manaRed mana

Pay full retail and you get a serviceable instant that blows up an artifact: fine, unremarkable, the kind of effect red has always been allowed to have. The price tag is theater, though, because the real card is the one you cast for nothing when your opponent has an Island down and you have a Mountain. That condition turns land types into a declaration of war. It reads the battlefield rather than your hand, and when the matchup is the one the design was built to punish (a deck leaning on Islands, which historically meant a deck leaning on artifacts and control), the answer arrives gratis. Against anyone not playing blue lands it stays a mediocre three-mana removal spell you would rather not draw, which is exactly the point: the discount is a hoser pointed at a single color, encoded in the board state instead of a sideboard slot. The symmetry of the requirement gives the discount its shape. The opponent has to commit an Island and you have to commit a Mountain, so the free window only opens in the precise confrontation the designers wanted to reward, never as a free-roll against a random opponent. Few removal spells wear their target so plainly on their sleeve; this one asks almost nothing of your hand and everything of who is sitting across from you.
