Mistmeadow Skulk

Creature — Kithkin Rogue1 generic manaWhite mana

Protection that scales by mana value is the clever part here: instead of naming a color, this Kithkin shrugs off targeting, damage, and blocks from everything that costs three or more, which in practice means most removal spells, most combat-relevant blockers, and the entire midrange-and-up portion of an opponent's deck. The threats it cannot dodge are the cheap ones (one- and two-mana burn, the odd small creature), exactly the things a defensive lifelinker is best positioned to race or trade against. The protection clause does the heavy lifting on offense too: it cannot be blocked by anything with mana value three or greater, so against decks built on fatties it connects unmolested, and the lifelink turns each hit into a small but real swing. The 1/1 body is the honest tax on all of this. Nothing about the creature wins a game on its own; it survives the expensive answers and dies to the cheap ones, which is a sharp inversion of how most evasive attackers are priced. It belongs to that early experimental streak of designs that asked what protection could mean once it stopped being tied to color, a question later cards kept circling from different angles. As a hard-to-target, hard-to-block lifelink clock that asks almost nothing of your mana, it rewards being deployed early and protected late, when the opponent's hand is full of spells it is constitutionally immune to.
