Instant3 generic manaBlue mana

The math is the whole argument. Force Spike asks one mana; pay-or-counter spells in this taxing family scale the kicker up as the tax climbs, and at four mana the demand to pay six is steep enough that it counters cleanly against almost any reasonable curve. The trade-off is that the tax is fixed and the spell is honest about being a turn behind: by the point you can hold up four mana and still want a soft counter, the opponent who genuinely wants to fight through can usually find six mana later in a long game, which is exactly when a hard counter would have served better. This is the structural problem with every "unless its controller pays" design at the higher end of the curve: it taxes most reliably when the cost to cast it is cheap and the tax small, and the appeal thins as both numbers grow. What this version buys for its four mana is reach. Six is a wall in the early and middle turns, so within that window it functions as a near-unconditional counter against opponents tapped out or close to it. The lineage runs from Mana Leak through Dissipate's exile clause and the whole pay-the-tax school; this sits at the expensive, blunt end of it, trading the elegance of a cheap soft counter for a tax large enough that paying through it is rarely worth the tempo.
