How this card plays

7 reviews

The dig is generous and the random-order bottoming is the leash, but the real question is whether your commander already wants to attack. At the full five mana, the spell puts up to two creatures totaling mana value six onto the battlefield from the top eight, a fine ramp-and-cheat payoff in a deck like Yeva, Nature's Herald or a midrange Goreclaw, Terror of Qal Sisma list that wants to flood big bodies into play. But those decks pay full price every time, and five mana for a See the Unwritten effect competes with more reliable ramp and more explosive cheats.

The sneak cost is what gives the card a real home, and a narrower one. Cast for 3 generic manaGreen mana by bouncing an unblocked attacker during declare blockers, it drops two free creatures before combat damage and returns the attacker to your hand. That rewards a creature-heavy, aggro-leaning green build with reliable evasion. Surrak, the Hunt Caller fits, since the deck already keeps the board attacking and can meet the discount most turns; a stompy Tana, the Bloodsower list works for the same reason. A pure ramp commander cannot satisfy the sneak condition, pays full freight every time, and would rather run Tooth and Nail or See the Unwritten outright.

This is a Bracket 2-3 card: too slow and too synergy-dependent for cEDH, too situational for precon. Sub-$5 on a recent printing. Treat it as the eighth or ninth creature-cheat payoff in a green aggro shell, not as a ramp piece. In a deck with no evasive attackers the sneak text is dead, and you are left paying five for a payoff a true ramp commander values less than its incumbents. The discount belongs to the tempo deck, which is the deck that should be running this.
