Memorial to Unity

Land

The cycle this belongs to all read the same way: a tapped land that taps for one color, plus a late-game sacrifice ability priced to be a release valve rather than a plan. What makes this one worth a slot is the shape of the payoff. Three mana and the land itself buys a dig five deep for a single creature, a tutor narrow enough to dodge the usual cost of card selection (it only finds creatures, and it bottoms the rest at random rather than handing you a stacked top). The design logic is flood insurance: in the early game it is a comes-into-play-tapped Forest, slightly worse than a basic, and that tempo cost is what pays for the option to convert a dead land into a body once your hand has run dry. The randomization on the leftover cards is the quiet discipline here; it keeps the ability from doubling as a deck-smoothing engine, so you get the creature you needed and nothing more. This is utility-land design at its most restrained: a sliver of fixing reliability traded for an effect you cash in exactly once, when the marginal value of another land has gone to zero.
