Meddling Mage
Naming a card and shutting it off before it can be cast was the kind of disruption that previously lived only on noncreature spells: the discard of Cabal Therapy, the lock of a sideboarded silver bullet. Pinning that effect to a 2/2 body changed the math. You get a clock and a tax-free, permanent prohibition in a single two-drop, and unlike a discard spell, the lock survives whatever the opponent draws later. The chosen name covers every copy, so one Mage answers a combo deck's entire engine or a control deck's only sweeper while it stays on the battlefield. That permanence is also the weakness the design leans on: kill the Wizard and the named card comes back online, which turns a static enchantment-like effect into something an opponent can fight through combat or removal. The card has to be read with the opponent's full decklist in mind, because naming wrong is naming nothing, and the choice is locked in the instant it enters.
The print run tells its own story. Wizards reached for this Wizard whenever a tool-belt set needed a clean piece of hatebear disruption, and the template it established (a small body that names a card and forbids it) has been re-skinned across later designs that name spell types, abilities, or colors instead. Few two-drops have served as a load-bearing reference point for an entire category of "creature that does a noncreature card's job."
