Mausoleum Turnkey

Creature — Ogre Rogue3 generic manaBlack mana

The trigger reads like clean recursion until you reach the rider: your opponent chooses which creature card comes back. That single clause turns retrieval into a negotiation, a player-interactive throttle early-era black leaned on far more than the modern reanimation toolkit does. You stock your graveyard, cast a 3/2 for four, and the value you extract is capped at whatever your opponent least minds you having. Fill your bin with interchangeable bodies and the choice stops mattering; load it with one bomb buried under a stack of chaff and the Turnkey hands you the chaff every time. The body is incidental, an Ogre giving the trigger a chassis. What makes the card worth a second look decades on is how the opponent's-choice clause works as a balancing lever rather than a downside to apologize for: the recursion is genuine, but its ceiling is not yours to set. That idiom largely faded from black's later retrieval cards, which trended toward unconditional return and let mana cost do the limiting instead. Mausoleum Turnkey belongs to the older approach, where the friction lived in the wording and asked you to outmaneuver the table rather than the curve.
