The mana value 3 gate is the whole tension of the design. Most spellslinger payoffs reward casting anything at all; this one demands you clear a floor, walling off the one- and two-mana cantrips and burn that these decks are built to chain and asking you to commit to bigger, splashier spells before the trigger even fires. Then the d20 punishes greed in a way flat card advantage never does. The wide 1-9 band feeds every player symmetrically, the 10-19 band hands you a private card, and only the natural 20 delivers the copy that every X-spell and board wipe is praying for. That distribution is the balancing lever: on paper the ceiling (a free copy with new targets) is enormous, but you hit it one time in twenty, so this is a card-advantage engine most of the time and a jackpot only rarely. The 1/1 body reinforces it, a fragile hub that does nothing the turn it lands and begs to be answered before the odds ever pay off. Where a Talrand or a Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind converts spell-casting into reliable, front-loaded value, this trades that certainty for a wider, chaotic outcome band, belonging to the dice-rolling lineage that treats variance itself as the reward. Players will remember it for the twenties and quietly forget the nines that fed their opponents.
