The Marit Lage token had always been a punchline before this: a 20/20 flying indestructible legend that Dark Depths and Vampire Hexmage combined to summon, one of the most famous two-card kills in the game's history but always a two-card kill, never a payoff you could grind toward. This reframes the fantasy entirely. Instead of stripping the ten ice counters off Dark Depths in one motion, it turns the twenty-power avatar into a critical-mass reward: assemble ten snow permanents and the token arrives on your upkeep. That shift from combo trigger to accumulation goal is the heart of the design. Snow-covered lands are the currency, which means the payoff is baked into a manabase that would otherwise do nothing else, and the scry attached to every snow permanent entering smooths the draws you take while you count to ten. The sacrifice is a timing gate as much as a threshold: it fires at the beginning of upkeep, so you telegraph the turn before the monster lands and hand the opponent one window to disrupt the count or answer the enchantment. Its lasting contribution is making the snow supertype, long a vestigial holdover from the game's earliest expansions, into a deckbuilding constraint people actually wanted to satisfy, and it proved Marit Lage could anchor a deck of her own rather than merely cap a two-card burst.
