Mana Seism

Sorcery1 generic manaRed mana

Burning every land you control into colorless mana looks like a build-around hunting for a payoff, and that is the catch: the spell trades permanents you need to stay in the game for a one-shot lump of mana with nowhere productive to spend it. The output is colorless, so it can only pay the generic portion of the red spells that would naturally sit beside it. What it actually produces is a large pile of mana in your pool for a single explosive turn, which means the card only justifies itself attached to something that wants an enormous lump sum: an X-spell, a giant activated ability, a single payoff worth liquidating your board to cast. Sacrificing the lands rather than tapping them is the structural choice that makes it both interesting and dangerous: untapped lands recover next turn, but these are gone for good, so the spell asks you to spend your future to win immediately. That all-or-nothing ramp comes from a thin lineage of effects that treat lands as fuel to be consumed, and it has always been among the most fragile, since it leaves you with no recovery if the payoff fizzles or gets answered before you can spend the mana. The reward is raw quantity; the cost is the permanence of the loss.
