Mana Cylix

Artifact1 generic mana

Color fixing has a price, and this rock pays it twice: once to cast, then again every time you tap it. That second tax is what separates the design from the unconditional fixers that surround it in the history books. Where a basic mana rock turns one tap into one mana of a chosen color, this one demands an investment each activation, making it filtering rather than ramp: the mana it produces costs mana to access. The effect is a wash on quantity but a gain on quality, taking a generic mana and a colorless body and laundering them into exactly the color a five-color manabase is missing. That trade reads worse than its contemporaries on a raw count, and it is, for any deck that only needs to hit its land drops. The card was built for the deck that does not: the greedy multicolor pile that has plenty of mana and a chronic shortage of the right color at the right moment. It belongs to a long line of color-filtering artifacts that solve fixing without adding to the count, a structural cousin to the painless lands and signets that came later, all of them answering the same question of how to splash a fourth or fifth color without flooding on lands. Cheap to deploy, costly to use, and honest about exactly which problem it is and is not solving.
