Mammoth Growth

Instant2 generic manaGreen mana

The pump spell that trades a modest boost for the biggest liability in the genre: information. A +4/+4 combat trick lives or dies on surprise, and foretell hands the caster a way to launder that surprise across two turns. Bury it during a lull for a couple of mana, then fire it later for a single green, and the tempo cost of holding up a trick gets spread out: you sink the mana on a quiet turn, then represent the effect on a turn when the mana would otherwise be tied up in threats. What foretell cannot do is disguise itself; an opponent looking at a face-down card knows a foretold spell is coming, and green's trick suite is short enough that the guess is often correct. Foretell sells the fantasy of instant-speed ambush while quietly telegraphing that something is buried, so the caster is buying discount, not deception. The +4/+4 spread does real work in combat math (it turns a two-power creature into a threat that trades up two full sizes), but the number was never the interesting part. This is a study in how a mechanic reframes an ancient effect: green has had oversized combat pumps for as long as the game has existed, and foretell asks whether spreading the cost across turns is worth surrendering the one thing that made those pumps lethal.
