Malachite Talisman

Artifact2 generic mana

Watching the table for green spells was a recognizable mid-90s artifact hook: a colorless card that stays inert until a specific color shows up anywhere across the board. The trigger fires on any green cast (yours included, which lets you feed the engine on your own turn rather than waiting on the table), but the untap is gated behind a 3 generic mana payment each time, and that tax is where the design folds in on itself. Paying three mana to untap a single permanent rarely beats simply keeping three mana open, so the card only earns its slot when green is genuinely saturating the table and you have a permanent worth resetting again and again: a mana source for a burst, a tapper, a blocker you want back on defense. That is a narrow and expensive intersection, and it lives or dies on how green the board happens to be. What survives the math is the structural idea (a repeatable untap engine driven by spell casts) buried under a payment that defeats the engine. The clean version of "untap on a spell trigger" got explored far more efficiently in later designs that dropped the per-use tax entirely; here, the 3 generic mana gating every trigger turns a potential build-around into a card that mostly sits in play asking the wrong question of whatever deck would run it.
