The reward is anchored to a single, precise event: the second card you draw each turn, not a running total and not a per-turn quota. That anchor is what makes the token engine so easy to switch on. Cast her during your main phase and you have already taken your draw for the turn, so her enter-the-battlefield connive counts as the second draw: she spawns a 2/1 Villain off her own trigger, no other draw effect required. On later turns the machine wants exactly one extra draw to reset the counter, a cantrip or a Phyrexian Arena tick or a Night's Whisper on your turn, because each turn's second draw (and only the second) manufactures another token. Menace is doing the real work on those bodies; they are built to push through a stalled board rather than sit behind it. The connive also hardens the caster: discard a nonland and she takes a +1/+1 counter, so the same filtering that digs toward gas nudges a fragile 3/2 out of range of the most common removal. The design's tension is generosity up front against upkeep on the back end. The turn she lands, draw step plus connive guarantees a token; every turn after, you have to engineer a second draw or the engine idles. A hand that runs dry of card draw leaves her a plain 3/2 with no evasion, having already fired her best trigger.
