Provoke and first strike are a deliberately paired mechanic: the keyword forces a defending creature to untap and block, and first strike resolves the resulting combat in the attacker's favor before the blocker swings back. That coupling turns this Soldier into a roaming removal effect on legs, dragging a chosen blocker into open combat it cannot survive. The catch is the price. Five mana for a 2/2 means the provoke trigger has to kill something better than a 2/2 to justify the slot, and a defender already larger than the body lives through the exchange even with first strike doing its work. The mechanic rewards aiming at small mana dorks, evasive utility creatures, and other 2/2-and-under bodies the opponent would rather keep back, not at the fatties provoke is theoretically built to drag into the open. Where comparable provoke creatures of its era leaned on bigger frames to win the forced block outright, this one bets on first strike to do the same job at a smaller stature, which makes it precise rather than powerful: a scalpel that only cuts cleanly against the right target.
