Llanowar Dead
The Zombie Elf type line is the whole joke and the design memo at once: Llanowar's elves famously make green mana, but this one is dead, so it makes black instead. That bit of flavor is doing real mechanical work. Black never had cheap, creature-based ramp the way green did; its accelerants tended to cost you life or cards. This one just costs an attacker, putting a swamp's worth of mana into a slot that black almost always paid a resource price to fill. Functionally it is a black-aligned Llanowar Elves moved onto a two-mana frame: you trade the one-drop's tempo for a sturdier 2/2 body and a color of mana that the original never offered. The rate is unremarkable, and was even by the standards of its era, but the gap it filled was nearly empty when it printed, a quiet enabler for the kind of black ramp that wants to land an oversized threat a turn early without bleeding life or hand. It belongs to a small tradition of cards that take a green idea and ask what it looks like in another color, and the answer here is a forest's mana-dork instinct rebuilt out of a swamp.
