Lifesmith

Creature — Human Artificer1 generic manaGreen mana

The lifegain here is taxed twice over, and that double tax is the whole balancing act. The trigger only fires on artifact spells, so the card asks you to already be playing the kind of artifact-dense deck where casting a permanent every turn is routine; then it asks for an extra mana on top of each cast before it pays out. Three life is a lot for green at this body, but the design wraps it in two conditions that keep it from being a freebie: you have to be casting the right spells, and you have to have mana to spare on a turn you are usually spending all of it. That makes it a payoff sized for a deck built around artifact volume rather than a card you slot in for incidental life. A 2/1 attached to the engine means it dies to almost anything, so the gain is rarely as sustained as the math suggests: opponents who care about the life total simply trade with it before the artifacts pile up. What lingers is the idea of a green artificer leaning on cheap artifacts as a life engine, a color-pie note that green and artifacts can share a synergy axis beyond ramp. The payout is real when the board is humming; the cost structure ensures it almost never hums for free.
