The eight-mana printed cost is a fiction the card almost never pays. Every point of life you bank on the same turn shaves a mana off the top, so the Mardu commander that reads as a durdly finisher is really a payoff for a lifegain engine you were building anyway: land the right sequence of drains, tokens, or a single fat lifelink swing, and she deposits herself for a fraction of face value. The cost inversion is what dictates the color identity. Red and white supply the aggression and incidental gain; black keeps the life total refillable, which matters because her own growth ability eats five life a turn to stack three counters. The design walks a tight loop: gain life to cheat her in, spend life to make her lethal, then gain it back to do it again. A first-striking lifelinker that can bloat to a one-hit clock is already a threat, and the counters are permanent, so a single early landing snowballs into a body that outsizes removal windows fast. What keeps the whole thing honest is the sequencing tax: the cost reduction only counts life gained this turn, so you cannot store credit across turns. She rewards a deck built to spike its life total in one explosive window, not one that grinds slowly upward.
