Every upkeep, the active player gets to grow a creature of their choice for free, and crucially that includes your opponents' turns as well as your own. That shared upside is the design philosophy of an older era, when an effect that helped the whole table was trusted to break in the hands of whoever built around it rather than being handed to one seat as a private engine. The triggered ability goes on the stack at the start of each upkeep, and the counter lands only on resolution. Because the target is locked in when the trigger goes on the stack, the recipient is chosen before anyone can react: an instant-speed removal spell can still strand the counter by killing the chosen creature in response, but a creature flashed in afterward arrives too late to receive it. The card rewards a board that turns raw stats into pressure (trample, evasion, a threat you can protect long enough to lap the field) and punishes the player who hoped to coast on parity. What keeps it from being a private value engine is precisely that you never control who benefits most from the wheel, only that you benefit a little each time it comes back around to you. It belongs to the green deck that wants to start a counters race and has a plan to win it, not to the one merely along for the ride.
