The second ability is the historian's fantasy made literal: a loot that also copies what you throw away. The exile clause is the whole restriction, and it points inward, not outward. Leonardo only mines the single artifact you just discarded to his own effect, exiling it from your graveyard to stamp out a flying 0/2 Thopter copy; the pile of artifacts already sitting in the yard is inert to him. So the ability is not graveyard recursion in the usual sense, it is a conversion window: an artifact card passing through your hand on its way to the graveyard gets intercepted and reborn as a token. That reframes the discard from a cost into a delivery mechanism. Cards you would rather not keep, an artifact you can no longer afford to cast, a redundant piece, become airborne bodies that keep the original's enters-the-battlefield trigger and its type line while losing its stats to a fixed 0/2. The anthem answers the obvious problem with a board full of 0/2 fliers, resizing every Thopter you control to X/X where X is your hand size, so the token engine and the payoff draw on the same resource instead of competing for it. Both halves want a full grip: the loot keeps the count level while it turns artifacts into fliers, and the anthem turns that same hand into a lethal skyline. A self-contained value loop dressed as a 3/3 for three.
