Strap this onto any creature and it becomes a pinger; strap it onto a Wizard and the damage doubles. That conditional is the whole conceit: a tribal payoff dressed as a generic aura, from an era whose Wizard subtheme wanted reasons to keep the type around the board. The repeatable one-damage ping is fine on its own, the kind of grindy attrition that picks off mana dorks and weenies a point at a time, but the design's real intent is the upgrade clause, which turns a Wizard host into a two-damage machine gun that clears most early creatures in a single tap. The catch is structural: an aura sinks your investment into a single body, and any removal pointed at the host eats the card you spent alongside the host itself. It rewards a board built around a hard-to-kill Wizard rather than a fragile one, which is where the tension lives. As tribal scaffolding it is unusually elegant: it functions outside the tribe as a baseline effect and rewards staying inside it, so the card never reads as dead in the wrong deck. The lineage is the classic Prodigal Sorcerer impulse, the tap-for-damage Tim, refitted as an enchantment that can convert a non-pinger into one and a real pinger into something faster.
