Lava Coil
The cleanest answer to the recursion problem that fair red ever got. Burn has always priced creature removal against Lightning Bolt's three damage, but four damage at two mana brushes against a wider band of midrange threats, and the exile rider is what justifies the rate without making the card a generic kill spell. The clause is precise: damage stays as damage (it does nothing to indestructible creatures, it cannot kill a planeswalker, it whiffs on five-toughness bodies), but anything the four damage does manage to drop gets exiled rather than going to the graveyard. That single line reorients the card from a tempo play to a closing answer against decks built to die and come back: it cuts off graveyard recursion and death-trigger value engines at the source, because a creature exiled from combat death or burn never reaches the bin those engines feed on. The exile clause does the structural work that black's edict-and-graveyard-hate suite normally splits across two cards, folding "remove now" and "remove permanently" into one shot. The cost of that compression is timing: as a sorcery, red gives up the instant-speed window, so the card cannot ambush an attacker or respond to a pump spell, only answer a creature on your own turn. It is the trade-off that keeps four damage with upside honest, and the reason this design became red's go-to template whenever a format needs a removal spell that punishes resilience without overshooting into pure efficiency.
