The decision sits with the wrong player, and that inversion is the whole trick. Most land destruction simply blows up the target; this one hands the controller a verdict priced in life: keep the dual land and eat six, or save the six and let the land be destroyed. Against a tapped-out opponent on a fragile life total, both options hurt, which is exactly when the card is at its peak. The narrow target is the cost red pays for the reach: it can only point at nonbasic lands, so it needs one on the battlefield even to be a legal cast. That makes it a beating against greedy fixing and a literal dead card against a basics-only manabase, where it sits in hand with nothing to hit. What gives it teeth is that the controller resolves the dilemma in their own favor: they keep the land and pay the life when they can spare it, and they let the land go when six damage is the price they cannot afford. So the caster rarely lands the outcome they most wanted; you are buying the better of your opponent's two bad days, not picking which one. Six is a real number, often enough that the burn line gets chosen against you, which turns this into a clock whenever the target's controller decides their life total is the cheaper resource. It is land disruption stapled to a conditional six-point burn, a tighter package than red usually assembles for two mana, fenced in by the requirement that there be greedy fixing to punish in the first place.
