Lasting Tarfire
A damage payoff dressed as an enchantment, and the trigger it watches for tells you exactly what deck it belongs to: not creatures dying, not spells cast, but counters placed. The condition checks whether you put a counter on a creature this turn, so a +1/+1 counter, an oil counter, a stun counter, any counter at all satisfies it, and the reward fires at the end step regardless of whose turn it is. That last detail is the wrinkle. Because it triggers at the beginning of each end step, a deck built to distribute counters on both its own turn and its opponents' (proliferate on an end step, a counter-adder that ticks on upkeep triggers, an instant-speed pump) can fire this twice per turn cycle. The passive framing hides an aggressive clock: it deals no combat damage, it defends nothing, it simply asks that your board-building generate counters and then converts that bookkeeping into reach the way a slow burn spell would. That reframes what "going wide with counters" is worth. In a shell that was already stacking +1/+1 counters for the beatdown, this turns every incidental counter into a second axis of damage that ignores blockers entirely, the kind of inevitability a counters deck usually has to build toward with anthems and evasion. The restriction is honest: no counter this turn, no damage. But the counter economy such a deck runs is precisely the part it was never spending anywhere else.
