Last Caress

Sorcery2 generic manaBlack mana

Three mana for one point of life-swing and a fresh card is a deliberately bad rate, and that is exactly the joke. The card is built for sentences that end in "loses 1 life," not for the life total itself. The targeting is the giveaway: it can only hit a player, never a creature or planeswalker, so it was never trying to be removal or reach. What it offers instead is a clean, on-demand life-loss event packaged with a cantrip. Point it at an opponent to feed anything that cares about a player losing life, or point it at yourself to register your own loss-of-life trigger, gain the point back, and draw, paying three mana purely to ask the rules engine to log the event. In a vacuum the spell reads as filler; the cantrip is the rider that excuses the rate, and it tips the card's intent in plain sight. The moment a payoff that counts life-total changes or rewards loss of life enters the deck, that floor stops mattering, because the decks that want this never cast it for the point of life at all. It endures precisely because its weakness is irrelevant to its actual job: it is a single, cheap, replaceable trigger generator wearing the costume of a terrible drain spell.
