Lady Orca

Legendary Creature — Demon5 generic manaBlack manaRed mana

Vanilla red-black demons in Legends were the set's attempt to put fair beaters on the same axis as the rare-and-strange. The body is the whole pitch: a 7/4 for seven, no keywords, no triggers, no drawback clause to compensate for power. That is the design conversation worth having. By 1994 standards, a creature this large without an upkeep cost, a sacrifice clause, or a comes-into-play penalty was the rare exception; most demons of the era carried a meaningful tax (Lord of the Pit's feeding, Sengir Vampire's modest size, the various Juzám-adjacent reminders that black's big creatures owed something in return). Here, the cost itself is the tax. Seven mana in two colors, in a format where lands tapped for one mana and ramp was a thin proposition, was the discipline that let the rate sit naked on the card. The toughness deserves attention too: four points puts the body inside Lightning Bolt-plus-a-blocker range, and any removal spell answers it trivially, which is the shape of a creature designed to attack once and either win or trade. Read against the rest of the Legends rare sheet, where commanders-in-waiting were defined by quirks and conditions, this is the plain statement: a demon priced at the ceiling, drawn at the ceiling, and asked to do nothing else.
