Strap deathtouch onto a creature for a turn and the math on the battlefield changes instantly: a 1/1 mana dork becomes a credible threat to anything that swings or blocks, and a single point of combat damage now answers a fattie the green deck could never trade with otherwise. That is the real job here. Green has always been the color that struggles to remove problem creatures cleanly, and granting deathtouch routes around that weakness by turning combat itself into the removal: you do not kill the dragon, you make your worm lethal to it. The replacement cantrip keeps the slot honest. Combat tricks that read the wrong way (no profitable attack, no incoming block) usually rot in hand; the draw clause means even a whiffed read recovers its card, so the spell never sits dead even when the blowout fails to materialize. It also widens the timing window: held at instant speed, it punishes an opponent who attacks or blocks into open green mana, since any of your creatures can suddenly trade up. The deathtouch grant rewards sacrifice and ping synergies too, where a single dealt point of damage from a deathtouch source spreads further than its size suggests. Plain in construction, but it solves a specific structural problem for green creature decks while refusing to cost a card to do it.
