Krovikan Scoundrel

Creature — Human Rogue1 generic manaBlack mana

A 2/1 for two mana in black with no abilities at all: the body is the entire card. By the era this saw print, the vanilla black two-drop had long been a baseline rather than a destination; a 2/1 here trades a point of toughness for the curve, fragile enough to die to almost any blocker or burn spell but cheap enough to start pressuring life totals on turn two. What dates it is not the statline but the rarity treatment: this is the kind of common-slot beater built to fill out the aggressive end of a deck, a creature whose job is to come down early, attack, and trade up if the opponent stumbles. The Rogue type was decorative in its time, attached to no mechanical payoff on the card itself, so the line on the page is flavor rather than function. There is no card-advantage engine here and no condition to satisfy: you cast it, you swing, and its value is measured entirely in damage dealt before it dies. As a piece of design it is a reminder that a great many creatures exist not to be built around but to round out a curve, and that a clean two-power body for two has always been a serviceable, unremarkable role-player rather than a card with a story to tell.
