Krosan Verge
Two lands for the price of one, fetched straight to the battlefield rather than to hand: that trade is what gives this its long shelf life in green ramp. The structural cleverness is that it ramps and fixes in the same activation. Most search effects pull a single land or thin the deck; this nets a full card's worth of permanents, advancing toward a payoff while smoothing a Selesnya color requirement at once. The cost is paid in patience. It enters tapped, taps for colorless only until you cash it in, and the activation asks for two mana plus the sacrifice, so the net acceleration shows up a turn or two later than a raw mana rock would. The activation does run at instant speed, though, since a land's ability carries no sorcery-speed restriction unless the text says so, which means you can crack it on an opponent's end step and walk into your turn with two untapped lands ready. Because it fetches Forest and Plains cards rather than basics specifically, it reaches dual-typed and Gate-style lands that carry those types, widening the fixing well past what the text implies at a glance. That combination of deck-thinning, tapland fixing, and a permanent that converts itself into two more permanents is why it has outlasted most of its contemporaries from an era of ramp pieces that asked nothing of the player except a willingness to wait.
