How this card plays

7 reviews

Heavy-artifact blue is the home, and the keyword does real work in a 100-card singleton list: a deck running Sol Ring, the usual mana rocks, treasures, and a thick artifact base routinely shaves the eight-mana sticker down to three or four, which is the rate that makes the late-game play honest. Urza, Lord High Artificer wants it as a refuel valve that matures into a finisher as the board fills; Breya, Etherium Shaper runs it for the same reason, since Breya lists naturally carry a high artifact count and chew through their grips assembling combo and value pieces. The enter trigger tops an empty hand back up to four cards, scaled to exactly how empty you are, and the +1/+0 scales off other artifacts you control specifically, so the 1/4 becomes a real clock only on a board you have built, not one the table has cluttered.

This is a Bracket 2-3 card. Refilling to four is a casual rate, not a cEDH one; competitive Urza shells want their combo lines and free interaction, not a 1/4 that draws back to a four-card hand. It is the late-game finisher in an artifacts value suite, the card you cast once the board is dense and the hand is spent, not a curve play.

Inside that suite it competes with cheaper refills. Thoughtcast draws a fixed two for a fraction of the mana and leaves the board alone; Krang's edge is the variable draw that scales to how badly you need it, plus a body that climbs with your own artifact count. A deck that wants raw card volume runs the cheaper effect. A deck that wants one card to refuel and present a threat runs this.

Expect a sub-$5 secondary price; precon-budget and casual artifact builds can include it freely. Outside Urza, Breya, and a few other heavy-artifact blue commanders, the card is inert.
