Kormus Bell

Artifact4 generic mana

Turning every Swamp into a 1/1 creature reads as a thought experiment more than a card, and what makes it dangerous is that it is a global state change, not a personal buff. Your opponent's Swamps animate too, and so do the Swamps you would otherwise be tapping safely for mana. That bargain is the whole point: the card rewards a player who is not relying on Swamps for mana (or who has a way to make them indestructible, untargetable, or pumped), and it punishes the player who is. The natural pairing is with anything that hoses creatures globally: a sweeper, a mass removal effect, a damage-based wrath, or the classic interaction with regenerators and pump effects that let your animated lands attack while the opponent's die. It sits early in a long conversation about treating lands as creatures, a conversation that runs from Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth flipping the script by making everything a Swamp first to the later manlands taking the inverse approach of handing you animation on your own terms and your own lands only. This remains the unfiltered version of the idea, an artifact that hands both players a weapon and trusts them to figure out who gets cut.
