Kopala, Warden of Waves

The Merfolk lord that protects sideways instead of forward. Most tribal lords hand out stats: an anthem, a keyword, a counter when a creature enters. Kopala does neither. Its whole contribution is a tax wall, adding two to the cost of every spell your opponents cast and every ability they activate that targets your school, itself included. Note the exact boundary: this touches spells and activated abilities only, so an opponent's enters-the-battlefield trigger or any other triggered effect slips through untaxed. That precision reframes which answers matter. Mass removal is still the thing this deck genuinely fears, because a board wipe targets nothing and the tax never fires; what Kopala shuts down is the surgical line, the targeted bounce, the point-removal that picks off a key threat mid-combat. Against those, the surcharge forces an opponent to overcommit mana just to break through, and it stacks: every Merfolk worth protecting means the tax gets budgeted again. The 2/2 body is small enough to fall to anything that does not target, so the protection covers everything on the axis it defends and nothing off it. It belongs to a narrow class of lords whose value is purely defensive friction, a cost-imposer rather than a force-multiplier. That makes it a poor topdeck and a strong anchor: dead when you are behind on board, brutal when you have a developed line of Merfolk an opponent needs to dismantle one targeted answer at a time.
