Legendary Creature — Human Cleric2 generic manaGreen manaWhite mana

Damage prevention as a tap ability put green-white in an odd posture in the early years: instead of healing after the fact, this kind of cleric committed a creature each turn to a shield, soaking combat damage rather than pressing an attack. The two-damage cap holds the rate in check. It saves a small creature from most early-game trades and softens a Lightning Bolt without negating it (one of the three points still lands, enough to finish anything with a single toughness), and it scales poorly against the haymakers that arrive later. Green-white was the natural home for the effect, since both colors had been doing damage prevention since Alpha (Samite Healer is the white-only ancestor), but pushing the ability onto a multicolor legend attached the prevention shield to a singleton rather than a rank-and-file medic. The body does no work: a 2/2 for four mana was already a soft rate when this kind of card first appeared and has aged into irrelevance. What the card sketches is an archetype Wizards keeps circling back to in fits and starts, the white-green protector cleric who taps to shield rather than to heal. The prevent-the-next-N template itself has largely been retired in favor of lifegain math, which leaves Takahashi speaking a design vocabulary the game has mostly moved past.
