Kavu Runner

Creature — Kavu3 generic manaRed mana

The haste clause runs backward from the way a red beater usually polices a board. In the multicolor era, white and blue were positioned as the slow, defensive colors, the shells red most wants to race, and this Kavu loses its speed precisely against them: the moment those colors put a creature in play, the haste switches off and a four-mana attacker becomes a fair 3/3 that has to wait a turn. Against decks built on noncreature interaction, mono-colored aggression, or any board lacking that pair of defensive colors, it comes down swinging. The stats are unremarkable; the design lives entirely in the conditional, and the condition cuts against the matchups where an extra turn of pressure would matter most. It reads less like a reward and more like a built-in tax that the wrong opponents impose for free. As color-pie messaging it is almost contrarian: rather than handing red a tool against the patient colors, it hands red a creature that gets quietly worse the more those colors sit across the table, a hasty raider that politely stands down when the slow defenders arrive. Whether the asymmetry was meant to reflect the colors' wedge relationships or simply to keep an aggressive red drop from punishing control too hard, the result is the same: speed offered everywhere except where you would most want it.
