Kaervek's Torch

SorceryX generic manaRed mana

An X-burn spell with a clause that reframes what scalable damage can be: while it sits on the stack, spells that target it cost two more. Most scalable damage spells live or die on the response window, the moment between announcement and resolution where an opponent can counter the spell or save the target. The tax does not close that window; it prices it. An opponent holding a counterspell now has to pay the printed cost plus two, after you have already sunk a heap of mana into X, so the math frequently tips toward letting it resolve rather than spending more to stop it. The design is a study in protecting a payoff without making it uncounterable: the spell stays a fully legal target, but the act of stopping it gets worse. That distinction matters, because a determined opponent can still interact; they just have to want it more, and pay for the privilege. Compare the blunter approaches that came later, the spells that simply read "can't be countered," and the difference in philosophy is clear: this taxes interaction rather than forbidding it. The damage half is unremarkable for its era, a flexible X-burn that hits any target, but the stack-tax clause is the reason the card has a name worth remembering, an early experiment in making removal resilient by attaching a cost to the act of stopping it rather than removing the option outright.
