Jovial Evil

Sorcery2 generic manaBlack mana

A hoser aimed at a specific cultural moment: white weenie was a defining strategy when this was printed, and Wizards answered it with a sorcery whose ceiling scales linearly with exactly that archetype. The design is unusually narrow even by the standards of its contemporaries. Most hate cards of the era keyed off a color (Karma, Gloom, Chill); this one filters by color and card type together, demanding white creatures specifically, which means it whiffs entirely against mono-white control builds and mono-white enchantment decks while doing ludicrous work against a Savannah Lions and Order of Leitbur board. The damage-doubling math is the giveaway: two white creatures already deals four, a board of four deals eight, and a developed white army ends the game on the spot. The dated assumption is baked into the targeting itself: it presumes opponents would reliably show up with creature-based white decks worth aiming at. Note too that the spell can only point at an opponent, never at yourself: the targeting clause is locked to "target opponent," so the card is purely outward-facing and counts only that player's white creatures. This belongs to a design philosophy where sideboard hosers punished specific metagame silhouettes rather than answering mechanics, and where "X equals twice something your opponent did" was considered a reasonable knob to turn.
