Ixalli's Keeper

Creature — Human Shaman1 generic manaGreen mana

Eight mana for a one-shot pump effect, paid out of a body you also have to sacrifice, is a rate from an era that priced creature activations as if they were expensive enchantments. The 7 generic manaGreen mana cost reads as a deliberate brake: a 2/2 that happens to carry a finisher buried so deep in its own mana requirement that reaching it means the game has usually been decided by other means. The trample rider is the one genuinely useful clause, since the point of a +5/+5 swing is to push damage past a blocker rather than to win a combat the creature was going to win anyway. What it is, then, is a green two-drop whose activated ability is priced to almost never come online: a curve-filler with a marquee effect stapled on, the kind of common that gives a tribal slot a body to play and a line of text to gesture at. The Human Shaman typing and the late-game ceiling suggest a creature that grows into relevance; the math never quite lets it, because paying eight mana to sacrifice your own blocker for a temporary swing is a plan that assumes you had spare mana, a spare creature, and a game close enough to need neither. The card is honest about its own limitation. It is a beater first, and everything past the beating is theoretical.
