Ivory Crane Netsuke

Artifact2 generic mana

The reward for not playing your cards. This belongs to the era when block constructed flirted seriously with the idea that holding a full grip should be its own payoff, and this is the artifact that pays it in life: keep seven cards back and you gain four life a turn, indefinitely, for a fixed two-mana investment. The design tension is right there in the trigger. The same density of cards in hand that powers the life gain is the density you have to refuse to spend, so the card only does its work for a deck whose whole plan is to sit behind a wall and out-attrition the opponent. It is a payoff bolted onto a behavior most decks cannot afford. Against aggression that math reads as a soft lock: four life a turn rebuilt is a clock most red decks of its time could not beat through, provided you stayed flooded with cards. Against anyone who forces you to act, it is a do-nothing two-drop that asks you to ignore your own threats. That conditional is the entire character of the thing. It is not a build-around so much as a thermostat for a control shell that already wanted to hoard, and the four-life number is tuned high enough to matter only when the surrounding deck has already solved the harder problem of staying full.
